Painting with *just* fingers is so last year.

This morning might have been one of the first times I’ve had the pleasure of waking Seamus up. I did a little “First day of school! First day of school!” bounce on his bed a la Finding Nemo. It was still dark at 6:50 when we stepped outside for a few pictures.
I thought it would be fun to have Seamus write his name so that over the years, we can see how it changes. Right now he’s an all capital letter guy.

I bought Seamus silly bands yesterday on a whim. They’re colored rubber bands that hold a shape – his are sea creatures. Really they’re just a bizarre kid trend that he was SO HAPPY to be a part of. I had no idea.

At Kindergarten open house, Seamus’s teacher had him practice the call-and-response (with bobcat paw hand sign) that teachers at Pease do to get the students’ attention. Pease! Bobcats! Pease! Bobcats!

Seamus saw a Batman backpack in the Pottery Barn catalog. Unfortunately, the moms who have their stuff together ordered theirs so early that the Batman backpacks are backordered until November. Good thing I told him yes before I checked. Whoops. My solution: a Lands’ End backpack plus iron-on Batman patch from eBay. Not bad.

An interesting, though in no way unusual, fact about me: I’m pretty terrified of birds. Not regular birds but birds with intention. Seagulls and grackles that want to bomb my car and steal my food. Parrots in cages with signs that say, “I bite.” And pretty much any bird that gets trapped on my screened porch. Not a fan.
Yet here I am with seven chickens in my backyard. And I really like my chickens. No eggs yet (and that IS the point) but it turns out they amuse me. They jump for blueberries. They follow me around. And yes, they have intention (I call it personality these days).![]()
So, I was the one who wanted chickens. But…not a rooster. Of course as luck would have it, Minnie Pearl, our favorite she is an unequivocal he. He crows. He puffs up and terrifies me. He is now referred to as Mister Pearl by some of our family. Fortunately for Dinner Pearl, he is scared of my blue flyswatter and Seamus loves him. Maybe it’s because Seamus calls him a “handsome boy” and refers to his comb as “your awesome red mohawk” but it seems like the feeling is mutual.
Here are some shots of Minnie Pearl as a chick and again as my pirate’s “parrot”. And here he is today, being sweet with Seamus and terrifying me.

Beautiful new baby + completely enamored parents = the best kind of session.

These two made quite a pair to photograph. So beautiful and real. We spent a quiet morning down at the greenbelt with a net and pickle jar. It’s amazing how much focus an 8 year old boy can put into that combination.
